Located in the upper reaches of Kangra valley at elevation of 4,780 ft, and surrounded by coniferous trees which includes the imposing deodar tree, sits the picturesque town of Dharamshala. It was once ruled by the Katoch dynasty which dates back to 4300 BC! It was earlier known as Bhagsu. When Lord Elgin became Viceroy of India in I861, he was so enthralled with the idyllic charms of Dharamshala, that he wanted it to become summer capital of India. Today, it the winter seat of the Himachal Government and is also the stronghold of the government in exile of Tibet and home to his Holiness the Dalai Lama.
