Sharath Kamal – the Incredible Indian

Chennai born Achanata Sharath Kamal is the reigning national table tennis champion for four years in a row now. Come October when the Commonwealth Games begin, he will also be defending his gold medal from the 2006 Games when he subdued the Australian William Henzell to consolidate his crown.

The 27-year-old Tamil looks calm and unperturbed; he has trained himself to not to get bothered by anything apart from winning. He is definitely not a talkative person; his achievements speak for him. Before joining the Commonwealth Games conditioning camp at Patiala he had won back to back US and Egypt Open titles and has already announced his decision to join the German professional circuit after battling it out in Spain for four years.

“My contract in the Spanish league expired a few months ago. I will be moving to Germany and it gives me a chance to play with top players and the competition will be much tougher compared to what I encountered in the Spanish league,” Kamal told IANS on the phone from Patiala, where he is training with the Commonwealth squad.

Currently ranked 76th, the lanky Tamil has set his sights onto breaking into the top-20 of the world rankings. Unfortunately, despite his two titles, and his surging rankings Kamal has not been able to cover much ground on the sponsorship deals. One reason could be the fact that table tennis being a very fast game is not at all a great television watch.

However for the time being Kamal has nothing but the Delhi Commonwealth Games on his mind. “I am playing the best table tennis of my life at the moment. Our national coach Massimo Constantini and his support staff have been of great help in the last couple of years. We expect tough competition from teams like Singapore but I am confident I will be able to defend my title,” said Kamal.
