IAC -India Against Corruption 2011 – India has won again & we need to celebrate.  First and foremost we must thank Anna Hazare who put his life on the line to bring national recognition to the fight against corruption. Some of the other important personalities who joined Anna Hazare in this campaign are Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar & Mallika Sarabhai.

I feel sick thinking of all the times I come across corruption in this country. The land of the mahatma, the land of Gandhigiri but it has all been washed away over the last six decades. We needed another savior & Anna Hazare has filled those shoes well.

We also need to congratulate ourselves for participating in this fight against corruption. Across India we started seeing people come out in support for Anna Hazare. Jantar Mantar in Delhi like Tahrir Square in Egypt became our symbol of revolution. Candle lit vigils, high profile celebrities, blue & white collar workers & the aam aadmi all came out in support of the “Jan Lokpal Bill” (Citizen Ombudsman bill).  We congratulate all the Indian citizens and salute the people who joined their hands with Anna Hazare in this fight against corruption. All of your efforts have paid amazing results and now is the time for the Government to pull their socks and show some action. Three cheers for our victory of the democracy.

Talking to a number of friends I also know that most people don’t understand the true essence of the Jan Lokpal bill so I thought it would be a good idea to give a brief summary here:

So What is the Lokpal Bill?
Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen’s ombudsman Bill) is a draft anti-corruption bill seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal to investigate cases of corruption & make sure they come to a speedy resolution.  Just like the election commission, no minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence this. It is going to be a completely transparent system and the member will be appointed by the citizens, judges and authorities and not by the politicians. Some of the features of Lok Pal bill would be:

  • It is going to help the common citizens of india
  • Citizens would get the compensation for the work which would take a longer time then the prescribed time for such work, lokpal bill will inflict penalty on the officer and the same would be paid to the bearer.
  • Lokpal will have to complete its investigations in a year, trial will be over in next one year and the guilty will go to jail within two years.
  • It will be the duty of the Lokpal to provide protection to those who are being victimized for raising their voice against corruption.
  • Any kind of loss caused to the government by the corrupt person shall be recovered from the guilty officer.
  • Merger of Lok Pal bill with CVC, Vigilance Dept and CBI Te powers will be with Lokpal to independently investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.

The fight against corruption has only begun
With the passing of this Jan Lok Pal Bill, Indians can see a ray of hope, half of the battle has won and we just hope we don’t give up half way and follow this till it comes into effect. The government must pass on this bill in the parliament coz the life of Indian citizens is at stake. This will go long way in giving good future to our country and good life to the future citizens of India.

But this is just the beginning & we must follow this through. Anna has promised if the government doesn’t follow through & enact the bill by 15 August then he will start his fast again. Keeping mind the government’s habit of often forgetting to keep promised deadlines, it’s important that the pressure generated by Anna Hazare’s efforts and the citizens of India should not go off the boil. It’s true that India has immense challenges related to corruption, but as is often said “Even the biggest journey starts with the first step” and that step thanks to Anna Hazare has already been made. Let’s keep walking and keep fighting until corruption is eradicated from India. Jai Hind!
