Republic Day IndiaRepublic Day is celebrated because this was the day when the Constitution of India came in force. The Constitution declares us to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. This in turn assures us of liberty, equality and justice. On 26 January 1950, India ceased to be a dominion of the British Crown and became a sovereign democratic republic. The word sovereign implies India is free from control of any foreign power and has a directly elected government by the people. Based on this very foundation, stands the Republic of India–the worlds largest democracy.
In all state capitals, from Agartala in Tripura to Chennai in Tamil Nadu to Srinagar in Jammu and Kasmir and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the National flag is hoisted and parades are held by the three wings of the armed forces. This is the day we remember our freedom fighters, people who without any thought for themselves or their families selflessly laid down their lives to attain martyrdom. For a cause called Mother India. A day, that we remember those who gave their yesterday for our today, and our soldiers who keep our borders safe. Not forgetting, the tireless vigil of our policemen who keep our towns and cities safe.
The celebrations begin with the presidential address to the nation. On this day the President of India honours people of India for their exemplary bravery, from members of the armed forces to normal citizens for their indomitable courage. This, year 22 young boys and girls will be given the National Bravery Awards for valour in saving others from danger. The Commander in Chief of our armed forces, the president will take the salute from different regiments and sections of the army, navy and air force. As usual, the march past will begin from Raisina Hill near Rastrapathi Bhavan go along Rajpath to the Red Fort. War horses and camels from the cavalry will be glitteringly caparisoned while cadets from the NCC will proudly display their marching abilities. Troupes from each state will flaunt their state songs and dances bringing about a time to ponder over our diverse cultures and yet our distinct identity as Indians. Strains of national anthem and vande materam will be played all along with different bands, reinforcing our pride and patriotism.Republic Day Parade in India
Yes, it will be a day in early spring with blue skies and the nip will still be in the air. So it won’t hot and dusty and perfect day for picnics and going to visit places like Red Fort, Purana Quila and the remarkable Delhi zoo. Check out Rewa the elephant which plays the harmonica or the African elephant at the zoo. There’s also the Digamber Jain Temple at the intersection of Netaji Subhas Marg Chandni Chowk, and not far away is the Mirza Ghalib Haveli plus lots of fine eating joints at hand. For those who would love to check out Delhi’s architecture, the Akshardham temple, the Birla Mandir, the Lotus temple and the Qutab Minar beckon. You could hire a car and tour Delhi with family. This Republic Day is on Saturday and if you are inclined you could also do a weekend getaway and go off to fun filled places like Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, Nainital, Kasauli, Agra or Jaipur and Jodhpur. Our freedom fighters gave us the freedom of movement, so do remember a silent prayer for our brave hearts and martyrs. It would make a Republic Day worth remembering.
