There are moments as the weekend approach when you feel like dropping everything and get away to a place where you don’t see the same streets, same flyovers and the same restaurants! A place where you don’t need to walk the talk, just walk and relax – Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh is one such destination and what’s more you also get enchanted with its sounds of silence! This cantonment town is about 300 Kms from Delhi (around 6 hours drive), 65 Kms from Chandigarh (2.5 hours drive) and 32 Kms from Kalka (1.15 hours drive) by road.

The legend of Hanuman

Legend goes Hanuman stepped on the hilltop while he was searching for the Sanjeevani Mountain and since then there is a foot-like depression atop Kasauli Hill which is called monkey point and has a temple dedicated to the monkey god. It comes under the purview of the air force as the mandir is within the compounds of a radar station and a base but as long as you are not carrying a camera or a bag, you will do just fine. Oh yes! The security does not allow anybody inside after 4 pm.

The quiet charm of Kasauli

Kasauli is sparsely populated and the best time to visit is in between April and June and September and November and if by any chance you are there in between November and February, you can actually walk several kilometers without bumping into any single individual!

Kasauli can be said to be divided into three main parts: lower mall, upper mall and main bazaar and it is needless to say that the view is great from both the malls. On a clear day you are supposed to get a grand view of both Chandigarh and Shimla.

Kasauli landmarks

Pasteur Institute set up in 1900 by Dr David Semple (now known as the Central Research Institute) has been involved in path-breaking work in virology and immunization. Christ Church, Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Ji, Kasauli Club are other important markers in the Kasauli landscape.

In Kasauli you don’t walk the talk, you just walk!
