66th Independence Day IndiaWe the people have 28 States and 7 Union Territories and seem to have forgotten all those both known and unknown freedom fighters, which made us who we are today. What we are and what we ought to be. Some people claim that freedoms’ just another word for nothing left to lose; true maybe, but what about our own constitution’s promise of: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY, of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation? Does the bickering and bantering of our present leaders actually amount to “Much ado about nothing?” We have 1.2 billion people, with more than half of them below the poverty line who give taxes whether directly or indirectly. We got nothing for them? Let’s all take that pledge again: “Wipe that tear from each and every eye.” Let’s all collectively give them an experience, a vision of looking beyond the present and prepare for the future, by setting goals beyond what we can achieve and achieve them through sheer diligence and focus. Let us each gift, a gift that will open the eyes, of one and all, an experience that’ll change the future for all of us, forever, by  putting our destiny on a fast forward mode.  Let us remember Ravindra Tagore’s prophetic words when he returned his Knighthood in protest against British massacre of peace loving unarmed civilians in Amritsar.

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free…………………………….Into ever-widening thought and action,

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father let my, let my people awake”

Even our most important fundament right: The right to life and liberty has become just another piece of paper; thousands die of hunger while the crops stored in our granaries continue to rot, simply because of misgoverning. Penury still continues at massive level because corruption reigns supreme.  Special powers are given to our military to kill their own citizens without a clause. Freedom of speech is curtailed because of fear from our own government. Black markets flourish at par with our GDP. Thousands of buildings collapse because of non adherence of building laws. Scams continue because of powerful patronages. We have to stem the tide that’s drowning India from within, with a second wave of freedom fighters.

But wait: There are powerful forces coming to our rescue: Anna Hazare will win the battle. Think of Irom Sharmila, who is fasting for over 11 years, so that our armed forces cannot murder our own people under the guise of democracy.  Truth will triumph! We are surging ahead, economically as the world’s largest democracy, giving all our adult citizens the right to vote for even notorious leaders. Let us contemplate why our forefathers shed their blood, to free us from the bondage of British colonialists.66th Independence Day For India

This week is a long weekend with Independence Day attached, so that you and your family can take a trip to Santiniketan –Tagore’s own home town or check out Places around Delhi. Our capital rebuilt over 7 times and full of historical monuments and artifacts dating back from the almost prehistoric cities of Indraprastha, Purana Quila to the pre and post mughal era and colonial Lutyen’s Delhi. This why we celebrate India’ freedom, freed from the shackles of foreigners and yet accommodating them too, in our hearts and minds, taking pride our unity in diversity, and as the world’s largest democracy.

So let’s all our get our acts together and forge ahead for in unity lies our strength.  Let us celebrate our heroes who gave our motherland the right to life and liberty, and our brave soldiers guarding every inch of our borders, under the harshest of conditions-just to keep our hard earned freedom safe. Only then can we be proudly called “The face of people power, globally”.

Jai Hind!
