Ooty: Across the Blue Rich Mountains

ooty viewThe town of Ooty is at an average elevation 7350 feet lies deep inside the Nilgiri Hills which is often called The Blue Mountains because of its smoky bluish hue, from the ever abundant eucalyptus foliage, and was originally home to the Todas tribes. In May 1819, the then Governor of Coimbatore John Sullivan started construction of his bungalow on this picturesque place. Soon, the route up to Coonoor was laid in 1830-32 and Ooty served as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and other small kingdoms around it. Today, Ooty can be reached through a winding hill road, or a complicated rack railway system, known as the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, built in 1908 by British venture capitalists. The game of Snooker is also thought to have originated at Ooty in 1884, by Sir Neville Chamberlain. Ooty also has a rather strange weather phenomenon: Spring occurs during Feb- March while autumn is from October-November.

Distance from Chennai:  By road 542 kms,( 9  hours by car), Luxury  Bus routes from Chennai/ Bangalore also available

By Rail:  From Coimbatore to Mettupalayam  (1 hour) and then  by Nilgiri Mountain railways(5 hours)

By Air Chennai to Coimbatore Airport and then 3 and half hours by road.

Shopping: Mainly in the Main Bazaar and Charring Cross

Buy: Tea leaves, coffee, eucalyptus oil, silver jewelry, tribal embroidery works.

Restaurants:  Kabob Corner, Hot Breads, Chandan Restaurant, Sidewalk Café, King’s Cliff Restaurant, Shinkows  Chinese Restaurant , Nahar Restaurant and C- Store.

Eat: All kinds of food available; try out the paneer fingers, wood fried pizzas, pastas and pies.

Places to visit: Government Museum, Botanical Gardens, Doddabetta Peak, Lambs Rock, Kanal Cross, St, Stephens Church, Emerald Lake .

Holsery Hills ViewLegend has it that there was a little girl named Mallamma who was raised by elephants, and used to heal tribal people from various ailments. She disappeared as suddenly as she came; leading the people to believe that she was Goddess and built a temple in her name. Located at an average height of 4232 feet, this hilltop was earlier called Yenugu Mallamma Konda district of Yenugu Mallama in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Enchanted by the beauty and charm of this place, the Collector of Cuddapah district W D Horsley built his summer residence here during 1840 -1843.  Today his residence has become the official residence of the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

By Rail  Madanapalle Road (13 km away), which is connected by the Dharmavaram-Tirupati passenger and the biweekly 12732 Secunderabad-Tirupati Express.

By Air: Tirupati ( Renigunta) Airport  plus 3 hours by car(144km) 

Shopping: Traditional tribal handicrafts of Chenchu tribes, Souvenirs from local shops

Restaurants: Punnani , Haritha Hills

Eat: South Indian meals, Pulihora Tarmarind Rice

Places to visit: Rishi Valley School and MallammaTemple. Being forested areas, enjoy the fragrance of Sampagi flowers, Reetha, Shikakai, Amla, magnificent Sandalwood trees, Red sanders Blue gum, Mahogany and Bamboo, abundant fauna include, bears, wild dogs and jungle fowl.  Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is located just 87 km away.

Adventure: Zorbing and trekking
