About Nainital

The word ‘tal’ means lake and thus Nainital is full of placid lakes where one recreate at leisure among the tranquil waters of these lakes. Naini Lake, in the centre of the city is where supposedly one eye of Lord Shiva’s wife, Parvati (Shakti), fell during his dance of destruction in the cosmos. The northern part of this lake is called Mallital, while the southern part is called Tallital. Goddess Shakti is worshipped at the Naina Devi Temple on the north shore of the lake. The other lakes include Nakuchia( having nine corners) and Bhimtal ( in reverence to Bhima ,one of the Pandavas) which offer serenity to the ornithologist and provides a bird’s eye view to the hang- glider. Even the Governor’s House built in1899, in Victorian Gothic style is a sight to behold. Surrounded by seven hills and nestling at a height of 6,837 feet, Nainital also possesses a unique cuisine of its own of which the primary dishes are Ras Bhat,Bhat ki joula, Papad ki Sabzi Muli ka Thechua, and Bhang ki Chatnee. Some of the other pleasures to tongue are the array of local fruits including Malta, Kafhal, Khumani and Punam which are sure to delight the taste buds of the first timer.
