Agra is veritable masterpiece in the echelons of history and architecture. It is home to the world famous Taj Mahal, the grand walled city of Fatehpur Sikri and the Agra Fort. Agra finds reference in the Mahabharata, wherein was it was called “Agrevaṇa”, or ' border of the forest'. It even finds mention in geographer Ptlomey’s map of the world in the second century AD. One of the earliest forts built here, Badalgarh, dates back to 108O AD and is said to have been built by the Sikarwar Rajputs stands almost on the same grounds as the present day Agra Fort, until it was captured by Mahmud of Ghazni. In 1506, Sikander Lodi shifted his capital from Delhi to Agra and it remained the later on as the capital of Mughal India till 1568. Every monument, every piece of architecture whether built in white marble like the Taj Mahal or red sandstone Agra Fort is steeped deep in history and each have their unique tale to tell, making it sheer eye candy for the history buffs and the architectural connoisseurs alike. Today, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, have all been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
