The origins of the name Kasuali are many; from mountain streams nearby called Kasul and Kausalya to the local flower called Kusmali. Developed mainly as a cantonment and sanatorium for the British based at nearby Shimla, the earliest recorded home built here is probably that of Henry and Honoria Lawrence, who built a cottage in August 1841 in memory of their infant daughter who died there. Kasauli also boasts of its own haunted house at Khetarpal Marg. Kasuali’s unique features include preservation of its heritage by not allowing new constructions , profusion of Hawthorne hedges which give off a silverfish sheen in moonlight and of course the tranquil, yet melancholic surroundings. Its other claims to fame are having one of the oldest still running distilleries in Asia, a home for writer Khushwant Singh and being the birthplace of Ruskin Bond. Located at a height of 6360 feet, it is 40 feet higher than Shimla.
